Size Matters! Choosing the Right Gauge of Frame for Your Commercial Metal Building

Despite popular belief, prefab commercial metal buildings are no longer strictly used for sheltering heavy equipment; rather, they can be used for a variety of residential, agricultural, and commercial needs. And while they are one of our most durable and reliable building styles, it’s still important to know what steel components are being used during the manufacturing process.

Each of our steel structures at Metal Barn Central are designed and engineered with the finest, heavy-duty, galvanized steel framing to ensure their longevity and durability. During manufacturing, each steel component undergoes a galvanization process where they are dipped in a zinc coating for added protection. Not only does this coating keep the steel from rusting, but it also keeps the color looking fresh for years on end. But before you start to think you’re done, there is one more important decision to make. Which gauge of frame will you choose for your steel building?

Thickness Does Matter

The enhanced quality of a galvanized commercial metal building, with the right steel framing size, allows our structures to stand strong for years to come. And while it may not seem too important now, choosing the right gauge of frame for your commercial metal building can determine just how reliable it is and how long it can provide you with a storage solution. There are two option we have for framework in the metal building industry: 12- and 14-guage. Both are excellent options for assembling metal structures, but there are several differences between the two. 14-gauge is the most economical framing option offered in the industry as it’s lighter and much thinner than our 12-gauge framing. Its diameter is 2 ½”x 2 ½” with a thickness range of 0.068 to 0.074. On the other hand, our 12-gauge is a much stronger, thicker, more reliable framing option. With a diameter of 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” and a thickness range of 0.095 to 0.1046, it’s our best possible framing option.

Which Framing Option is Best?

A thicker steel not only has the ability to support a higher snow load, but it’s better equipped to withstand a higher wind rating. Due to this durability and outstanding reliability, we highly recommend opting for the 12-gauge framing option. A few of the benefits you stand to gain by choosing 12-gauge framing include the following –

  • More Reliable
  • Stronger
  • Thicker
  • Longer Lasting
  • More Durable
