Many of you NC residents may be too young to remember that popular commercial jingle which was introduced into our airwaves during the 1970s. But if you’re like me and was fortunate enough to grow up here during that time period, “I Like Calling North Carolina Home” got drilled into your brain hundreds of times between episodes of Sanford and Son, Happy Days, Good Times, Laverne & Shirley, and The Jeffersons. I recall the jingle sounding a little on the cheesy side, but the truth spoken in those lyrics has not been lost on me over all these years. North Carolina really is a great place to call home!
And those of us who grew up here aren’t the only people who realize this. Long-gone are the days when North Carolina was able to fly under the radar as just another sleepy Southern state that all the Yankees (translation: anyone who lives north of Richmond, VA) passed through on their way to Florida. People have been moving to the Old North State in droves for decades now. As of 2019, NC continues to be among the top 10 fastest-growing U.S. states, and currently ranks as the 9th most-populated state in the union.
Why does everyone seem to want to come here? For starters, North Carolina has an ideal set of geological features. We’ve got the Blue Ridge mountains, we’ve got plenty of gorgeous beaches and islands, and we also have a rich assortment of foothills, piedmont, and coastal plain sections. In terms of attractive land features, we’ve really got it all.
Oh, and there’s the weather. NC is blessed with a temperate climate that features four distinct seasons. We get plenty warm in the summer, many parts of the state get some of the white stuff in the winter, and spring and fall are both refreshingly pleasant here. Too cold for you “up North”? Too hot for you “down South”? In North Carolina, you can find just the right weather sweet spot.
And if the geography and climate aren’t enough, NC has a pretty thriving job market overall, and it’s harder to find nicer neighbors than those you’ll encounter within our borders. Our metropolitan areas continually rank as some of the best places to live and work in the nation, and we’ve still got plenty more rural areas that continue to exhibit their own brand of Southern, small town charm.
